The Science of CBD and Sleep
Jun 2, 2021
Many of our customers comment on how much their sleep improves when they start using our CBD tinctures and gummies. However, while it appears from testimonials like these that CBD can help you sleep, researchers still aren’t 100% sure how CBD and sleep are linked. Let’s take a look at the research on CBD and sleep and some products you might like to try.
Cannabidiol May Help to Calm Your Mind
How many of us can’t sleep at night because our minds are still racing from the events of the day? According to research, insomnia is very common in anxiety disorders and it is even being included as part of the process of diagnosing these disorders.
Inspired by previous research on CBD as an anxiolytic, a large case study was published in The Permanente Journal in 2019 showing that CBD improved anxiety sufferers’ sleep in the first month but then their sleep quality continued to fluctuate. While this study wasn’t 100% conclusive, anecdotal reports show that people frequently take CBD for self-described problems with anxiety and sleep and consider the treatment to be helpful for improving their symptoms.
Cannabidiol May Support the Sleep Cycle Indirectly
As we know from studying the endocannabinoid system, cannabis — and CBD specifically — connects to receptors in the human body that regulate several biological functions. One of these functions is the sleep/wake cycle, which is connected to our circadian rhythm.
If CBD works to bring our bodies into a greater state of homeostasis (everything working within healthier parameters), it would make sense that CBD and sleep would go together — even if it might take a few days to experience improved sleep with cannabidiol.
As a broad-spectrum support for the body, cannabidiol may also help with other issues like pain, seizures, mood problems (including anxiety), and hormonal changes — easing these sleep-disturbing problems and allowing your body to rest most effectively.
Products to Try for a Better Night’s Sleep
To answer the question, “can CBD help you sleep,” the best strategy is often to try a lab-tested, THC-free product and test the CBD-and-sleep theory for yourself. The only times we wouldn’t recommend self-administration of CBD is if you’re pregnant, nursing, or taking medications that are known to interact with cannabidiol.
CBD + Melatonin for Sleep
Our capsulated CBD formula is specifically designed for supporting sleep. In addition to our broad-spectrum extract of medicinal hemp with 25 mg CBD, our CBD + melatonin capsules for sleep include 1 mg of melatonin per serving for a multi-pathway approach to insomnia.
Premium CBD Soft Gummies
While our gummies aren’t designed especially for sleep, many of our customers find that one CBD gummy before bed can help them to sleep through the night and wake up feeling refreshed. If you enjoy a naturally sweet taste, why not try our gummies for CBD and sleep?
Natural CBD Oils
If you prefer the idea of a sublingual tincture, you might like to try one of our natural CBD oils — available in mint, orange, and natural flavors. These oils feature our phytocannabinoid-rich hemp oil, extracted from our proprietary medicinal variety of hemp leaves and flowers, making our oils highly effective.
