“Organic” CBD: What it Means & How it’s Different

“Organic CBD oil” is a phrase that you’ll see frequently on the  Kanavia website, but what does this term really mean in practice, and how is our online organic CBD collection different from other conventional CBD products? Join us as we explore the regulations surrounding organic products in the USA and how organic, sustainably-harvested hemp produces the cleanest, most potent cannabidiol for your CBD wellness products.

What Does “Organic” Even Mean?

In the most basic sense, “organic” refers to a product that occurs in nature, is not man-made, and generally breaks down easily in the earth. In our modern-day world, however, “organic” refers to crops that are grown according to a specified set of regulations. Our organic CBD oil comes from medicinal hemp grown without the use of prohibited pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. Industrial hemp lacks the quality and potency of CBD content that medicinal hemp contains. That’s why we only use our proprietary unique medicinal-grade strains for our range of CBD products.

A Totally Different Philosophy

Conventional farms — which make up around  99.4% of U.S. agricultural production — focus on maximizing crop output with minimum inputs. They typically select the crop varieties (sometimes genetically modified) that display the greatest resistance to disease and pests. This gives the grower predictable results and a crop that “looks good.”

In contrast, organic CBD production puts less emphasis on cost-cutting and uniformity and instead  focuses on maintaining a healthy soil ecosystem, by:

  • Recycling on-farm resources
  • Promoting ecological balance
  • Conserving biodiversity

Can Imported Hemp be Classed as Organic?

Other vendors might claim that they sell organic CBD oil that was grown overseas. However, the only way to be truly certified organic in the United States is by following the regulations set out by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and participating in routine, ongoing inspections.

Hemp coming from overseas (usually China and the EU) cannot be certified organic by the USDA unless it is part of a  participating program. In addition, organic hemp in the USA must be produced as part of the “U.S. Domestic Hemp Production Program and/or the 2014 Farm Bill.”

What You’re Getting with Organic Hemp

The hemp that we use here at  Kanavia Organics differentiates itself from that of other organic CBD vendors because our hemp is organically grown on 100% American soil. That means, with our organic CBD oil, you are receiving natural CBD oil products that are guaranteed to have:

  • No prohibited substances applied to the land for at least three years.
  • Nutrients are supplied to the soil via crop rotation, cover crops, animal and crop waste, and approved fertilizers.
  • Pests, weeds, and diseases are controlled using physical, mechanical, and biological methods, and substances from the National List only when necessary.
  • The hemp crops come from organic seeds and rootstock when available.
  • Genetic engineering, ionizing radiation, and sewage sludge are prohibited.
  • The harvested hemp must not be contaminated with any prohibited chemicals or substances while in transport.

Better for You, Better for the Environment

There is a lot of work that goes into growing the hemp for our organic CBD oil, and the use of natural methods to manage soil fertility and reduce pests takes more time and effort than conventional chemical-based techniques. However, the result is a hemp harvest that is much safer for you and protects the health of animals and waterways.

Are Organic Products More Nutritious?

While organically grown hemp may be better for the environment, is it fair to say that it’s nutritionally better for our bodies, too? The short answer to this is “no,” but the long answer is “maybe.”

All other factors being equal, an organic CBD oil crop is the same as a hemp crop grown with the presence of harmful pesticides, except that you don’t have to worry about the build-up of toxins. However, the philosophy behind organic farming does make a difference in other ways.

Organic Material

For example, the organic material that’s added to the soil in organic farming helps to supply nutrients that are easily absorbed by plants, as well as improving the soil structure so that less irrigation water (along with surface fertilizer) evaporates into the air.

Heirloom Varieties

Organic CBD production also tends to use more unusual and heirloom varieties, which may be more nutritious than the standardized varieties grown by conventional farmers. As a case in point, the hemp that we use in our organic CBD oil is a prized medicinal variety that offers an especially potent blend of active components.

Maximum Absorption with Nanoemulsion Technology

The higher price tag of organic CBD oil might lead you to wonder if the investment in organic is really worth it. That’s why it’s important to understand the way our products are prepared.

Extraction

To begin, we use a fully-enclosed ethanol and CO2 process to extract a broad-spectrum hemp oil from our plants. This oil is rich in phytocannabinoids and still contains all of the original terpenes, flavonoids, and sterols.

Purification

Once our organic CBD oil has been extracted, we then use a proprietary liquid chromatography purification technique to remove 100% of the THC, without disturbing any of the other ingredients.

Nanoemulsion

In this final step, we use a proprietary nanoemulsion process to break down the oil into tiny particles, increasing the oil’s surface area, and making the active compounds up to six times more bioavailable. The result is an oil with a much higher value for money, as you only need a sixth of the amount to gain the same benefits as regular organic CBD oil.
