4 Famous CBD Success Stories

Charlotte Figi

Charlotte Figi’s story is perhaps the most well-known and one that has touched the most lives around the world. Charlotte was born in 2006 with Dravet syndrome — a rare form of epilepsy that caused her to suffer from grand mal seizures up to 300 times each week.

After trying everything conventional medicine had to offer, Charlotte’s parents began to consider cannabis — locating a high-CBD, low-THC strain that was later renamed as Charlotte’s Web. Almost immediately after taking the cannabis oil, Charlotte’s seizures reduced to only two or three per month and she became able to walk, talk, and eat without help. On April 7, 2020, Charlotte tragically died at age 13 due to complications with a respiratory illness.

Five years earlier, when Charlotte’s story became known, the dramatic change in her health due to cannabis inspired a movement that was followed by the development of Epidiolex® — an FDA-approved CBD extract prescribed for rare and severe forms of epilepsy. Of all of the most famous CBD success stories, Charlotte Figi’s story has had the most far-reaching impact.

Rebecca Sewell

Another moving story is that of Rebecca Sewell. In 1993, when Rebecca was 10, she was subjected to a magic trick in which a pair of handcuffs were placed on her ankle, causing an injury known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).

After months of therapy and years without pain, Rebecca suffered a lower extremity stress fracture and all the pain came back with force. Eventually, the pain became so debilitating that she was confined to a wheelchair and then to a hospital bed with a continuous morphine pump.

After eight years of constant pain, Rebecca started to experiment with cannabis and found that it helped her relax. With further experimentation with medical cannabis, she was eventually able to have the morphine pump removed, stop taking most of her medications, and became an ambassador for CBD success stories and policy change.

Ashley Surin

Ashley Surin was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) when she was barely a toddler and treated with an intense course of chemotherapy. While the treatment was successful and Ashley survived, she, unfortunately, began having seizures nine months later which continued almost daily for the next nine years.

At her doctor’s suggestion, Ashley’s parents started to explore medical marijuana and found the results to be absolutely amazing. Not only did they no longer need to rush Ashley to the hospital on a regular basis, but their daughter could think and interact much better and had more control over her body — similar to Charlotte Figi’s story.

The biggest challenge for the Surin family was changing the law so that Ashley could wear her CBD-THC patch to school, as medical marijuana was banned on school grounds. They eventually managed to have a law passed that is now known as “Ashley’s Law,” allowing medical marijuana patients in Illinois to use their cannabis medications at school.

Walter Rodlund

The last of our CBD success stories is that of Walter Rodlund — an active outdoorsman whose movement became severely limited when he developed Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) at age 81. After developing COPD, Walter had to cease all of his outdoor activities and suffered from intense pain in his lungs as well as regular bouts of bronchitis.

Later that year, Walter’s daughter gave him some CBD hemp oil to try, and his breathing capacity improved within three weeks. His lung capacity increased from 92 to 98-100% and he was able to get around much easier than before.
